Supporting local families with their household budget pressures, like cutting fuel excise in half, saving you 22 cents per litre for six months. We’re also making a one-off payment of $250 for 17,314 local pensioners and carers and increasing their regular payments. And we’re establishing a $10 billion reinsurance pool to reduce premiums, while investing in affordable housing.
Our economic recovery plan lowers taxes for families and small business and invests in skills, infrastructure and manufacturing. Around 72,000 local low and middle income earners will receive up to $1,500 in further tax relief this year, including a $420 tax offset. And we’re investing in extra skills & training places.
We’re investing in local roads to save lives and reduce travel times. Major local projects include $287.2 million for the Captain Cook Highway upgrade (in planning stages with QLD Transport and Main Roads), $180 million for the Cairns Southern Access Corridor – Stage 5 (in progress), $240 million for the Cairns Western Arterial Road Duplication (commencing September 2022) and $68.5 million to the continue the sealing of the Peninsula Development Road.
Investing in better services and a stronger Medicare by delivering over 350,000 local Medicare telehealth consultations since 2020 and we’ve funded more than 1.7 million free or subsidised medicines in the last year. Making childcare more affordable by removing the annual cap and increasing subsidies for families with multiple children. We’re investing record funding in aged care to help the 20,743 seniors living locally. Construction on the $60 million University Hospital is also underway and we’re improving the quality of life for women living with endometriosis with record support for our National Action Plan.
I’m proud that we’re investing in our local communities, with better facilities and public spaces and a health local environment that families can enjoy now and into the future. Projects like the Cairns Cycling Club, Cape Animal Protection Society Shelter in Weipa, Cooktown Botanical Gardens and the Cairns Gallery Precinct. We’re building the first ever renewable energy microgrid in the Daintree and providing an extra $1 billion to protect the Great Barrier Reef.
National security is an important issue for all Far North Queenslanders. That’s why the Morrison Government is investing $70 million to establish Defence’s Regional Maintenance Centre here in Cairns, along with multi-million-dollar upgrades to HMAS Cairns. As more naval ships are maintained here in Cairns, more Defence and industry personnel will be required, which will further support long-term local jobs and diversify our economy. The first of six Australian-built Evolve Cape class patrol boats will also be home-ported in Cairns from mid-2022. This is in addition to supporting agriculture and manufacturing jobs through our investment in the Mossman Mill Bio Precinct as part of our $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy.
Our Plan is Building a Strong Economy for a Stronger Future
Creating more, better paid jobs.
Delivering tax relief for workers and small businesses.
Investing in roads, rail, dams and renewables.
Making record investments in health and aged care.
A stronger defence force to keep Australians safe.
